I was given Curb Your Enthusiasm: Complete Seasons 1-5 as a gift and I absolutely adore it. It is an addictive and compelling comedy of manners. There is a recent trend for shows that are emerging from America, following on from a great British comedy tradition that is all about discomfort, which I have a name for: squirmedy.
Squirming uncomfortably in your seat is enjoyable in fundamentally the same way as laughter is, in either case you are expressing a sense of relief that it isn't happening to you.
It is the same mixture of Schadenfreude and social anxiety that was typified by the character of George Costanza in Seinfeld, so it may not surprise you to learn that Larry David, who writes and stars in Curb Your Enthusiasm, was the co-creator and co-writer of Seinfeld upon whom the character of George was based.
Curb Your Enthusiasm follows the misadventures of a rich, successful misanthrope who flouts the rules of social etiquette, often landing himself in very hot water with his wife and their friends. It’s a very postmodern show in which celebrities such as Ben Stiller and David Schwimmer guest star as heightened caricatures of themselves. What I enjoy most about it is the writing, which is amazingly honest and insightful.
