The Exorcist Director's Cut

The Exorcist - Director's Cut is the definitive version of this well-crafted and frightening film, which I think really transcended the horror genre to become considered a classic film.

The screenplay was adapted from a novel by Catholic scholar William Peter Blatty who had won US$10,000 on the Groucho Marx show ‘You Bet Your Life’ in 1950, and when Marx asked him what he planned to do with the money, had replied that he would write a book. The Exorcist, which was based upon a case Blatty had heard about while studying at university, was the result.

The Exorcist depicts the surprisingly believable story of a young girl whose body is taken over by an evil entity. Linda Blair’s brave and memorable performance as the possessed Regan, is what really makes this film shine.

It is really a film about good versus evil, or more precisely, about the possibility that if pure evil exists, therefore pure goodness must exist also. It is also about faith, the strength and belief of the priests who are called in to exorcise the spirit from young Regan, and of the sacrifices they are willing to make in order to save her.

The Exorcist Director’s Cut is the most stunningly spectacular edit of the film, and includes scenes that were previously deemed too shocking but are too good to be missed, such as the blood-curdling ‘spider walk’.
