Frasier Six Season Pack contains the first (and best) six series of this hit comedy which was a spin-off from Cheers. Kelsey Grammer stars as slightly snobby radio psychiatrist Frasier Crane, who shares an apartment in Boston with his father, a down-to-earth retired cop who is played by the great actor John Mahoney.
The show is mainly about Frasier's dating life and his relationship with his brother. David Hyde Pierce is extremely funny as younger brother Niles who is also a psychiatrist, and is rather sceptical about Frasier practising their profession over the radio as well as being somewhat envious of his fame.
Both Niles and Frasier are incredibly neurotic and also in constant competition with each other. The chemistry between the two actors is so believable and the banter between the two brothers is one of my favourite things about the show. The writing is stylish and clever, and there is something really classy and fresh about the humour.
I think that this show really captured the Zeitgeist of the early Nineties, when psychiatry had become part of the cultural consciousness. The general population had been in therapy or had friends who were, most people had had some exposure to pop psychology books and were familiar with the terminology. I love that the coffee bar they frequent is called Café Nervosa and their favourite restaurant is French for ‘The Flying Cigar’.
Frasier is an insightful comedy about modern masculinity and will definitely stand the test of time.
