This Gilmore Girls Complete Seasons 1-4 box set contains my favourite seasons of the superb American drama starring Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel as Lorelai and Rory Gilmore, who are not just mother and daughter but also best friends.
They live in the idyllic town of Stars Hollow, a world as cosy and innocent as Dawson’s Creek, where the inhabitants exchange dry ironic patter as if they are on an episode of The West Wing. Gilmore Girls Complete Seasons 1-4 follows Rory and Lorelai’s relationship through Rory’s three years at Chilton, an expensive private school where she doesn’t quite fit in, and her first year at college.
Because of the relatively minimal age difference between them, their relationship is unusually close and very democratic. This can be fun as well as problematic for Rory, having a mother who is young and single makes her different from the other students at Chilton, and because Lorelai is more like a room-mate than a parent, their roles aren’t as clearly defined as perhaps she would like them to be.
This is a thoroughly entertaining and gripping show that is funny and real. The mother and daughter parts are equally well written, so it would be enjoyable and relatable whether you identify with teenage Rory or thirty something Lorelai.
