Gilmore Girls: The Complete Second Season is one of my favourite seasons of one of my favourite shows. Teenage Rory and her cool young mum Lorelai have amazingly fast and funny conversations about nothing and everything. They live in the sleepy town of Stars Hollow where Lorelai runs an inn, and Rory commutes to a posh school called Chilton where the other students are entertainingly precocious and snobby.
Small town life is depicted with all of its perks and pitfalls, the advantages of living in a community where cosiness, friendliness and traditional values abound are tempered by the drawbacks, that it is at times too tightly-knit, claustrophobic and gossipy. The kooky and eccentric characters include Miss Patty, a former Broadway star who runs a dance school, and the socially-challenged Kirk, who lives with his mother and ubiquitously appears everywhere because he works at every establishment in town.
What really makes Gilmore Girls Season 2 wonderful are the two leads. Alexis Bledel plays Rory with a very subtle and natural acting style. She possesses an openness and vulnerability, and a miraculous bone structure that brings to mind a young Audrey Hepburn. Lauren Graham, who plays Lorelai, is an intelligent and gorgeous actress who delivers her lines with flawless comic timing and a perfect balance of sarcasm and lightness that makes her very likeable and real.
