The Mathmos Space Projector is an updated version of the lava lamp that became synonymous with the Mathmos name during the psychedelic Sixties. The bulb inside the projector gradually heats the coloured oils in a wheel, simultaneously projecting the image onto a wall.
As the oils heat up, they expand and the pattern slowly shifts and mutates, creating a kaleidoscopic light display that can be adjusted to up to 1.5 metres in diameter.
While the Space Projector itself looks modern, streamlined and funky, the images created are organic, like something you would see on a microscope slide or in outer space. Whereas a lava lamp is a finite object in one corner of a room, the Mathmos Space Projector is a mood lighting device that can completely transform one’s surroundings. The hypnotic, evocative images and endless permutations of colour can set a relaxing and meditative mood when enjoyed alone, or can add exciting ambient flair to any social gathering.
You can purchase extra oil wheels with different colour schemes.
What I love most about my Space Projector is the notion that the luminous paintings it produces are ephemeral and ever-changing. This is art that doesn’t exist as a fixed piece but is a gorgeous illusion, forever in flux.
