I spend most of my time typing on a keyboard and play the piano as a hobby, and so I wasn’t that surprised when about two years ago I developed carpal tunnel syndrome in both wrists. This is also known as RSI or Repetitive Stress Injury and is a nerve strain that is caused by making fine-motor movements such as typing or writing.
It was really awful because I was out of action for about eight months. I couldn’t move my fingers without a shooting pain that feels like when you bump the funnybone in your elbow. I couldn’t eat with a fork or get the lid off the toothpaste, and worst of all my boyfriend at the time had to put on my makeup for me. Let me tell you, it was not a good look. I decided not to opt for carpal tunnel surgery, which only has a 50% success rate anyhow, and had a course of acupuncture instead which fortunately worked.
Once I had completely healed, I decided that I didn’t ever want to go through that again. I purchased the Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000 which has a split design and curved keyboard layout to reduce strain on the wrists, and I am glad to say that my injury has not returned. If only they could make a piano keyboard like this, then I wouldn’t have to worry at all.
