Singin’ In The Rain 50th Anniversary Special Edition is a rip-roaring musical extravaganza that is loaded with extras and not to be missed. I have loved this movie ever since I was a child, and I especially adore it because it has that cool bit where people throw sand on the floor and tap-dance on top of it.
I don’t know why, but it is impossible to be sad while watching tap-dancing on sand, the frolicky jollity of it and that crunchy sand sound instantly cheers you up.
It has synchronised swimming, loads of great songs and the amazingly long legs of Cyd Charisse. What more could you possibly want? The story takes place in Hollywood during the Twenties, at the start of the ‘talkies’ era. For a stunningly beautiful movie star with a horrible, squeaky voice it marks the possible end to her career.
There are some truly memorable numbers, my favourite of all being “Make ‘Em Laugh” with Donald O’Connor running up walls and doing a little somersault at the top. I had always assumed that this was some kind of special effect until recently when O’Connor died, I read in his obituary that he had actually done this, there was no gimmick.
