Having a love of purely retro/modern (modtro) design I had decided that I required a portable radio to add to my collection of cool brought back gadgets and gizmos. Priced at £66.53 the TEAC R-1 Portable Radio is a luxury item and has provided my room with style and class essentially emitting from this modern object.

Digital maybe the way to go, but who wants crystal clear sound that often disappears when the digital signal is lost? This is why the TEAC R-1 Portable Radio is perfect; it has an AM/FM tuner, which provides original retro sounds to the coolest tunes. According to the box it has a “2.5W 3" full-range speaker”, all I can tell you from experience that you can certainly hear this radio playing the latest tunes in great sound. One of the best things about this portable radio, believe it or not, is that it is an entirely portable unit! The unit is operated by a rechargeable battery great for picnics in the park or trips to the beach in the summer! The unit is light and at 1.3Kg the unit certainly will not weigh you down.

Okay that is the TEAC R-1 spec over and done with now. I will tell you about the great modtro design that certainly appeals to all my friends and family who are dying to get one too. The portable radio comes in two different colours a black main body with a white outline, or a white body with a black outline. Personally I was torn between the two but eventually I chose the black main body with a white outline, due to black allowing the portable radio to look sleek and sophisticated, but the white body with a black outline was such a close call.

Personally the portable radio reminds me of a safe with its tuning dial in its minimalism form, when you carry the portable radio by its contemporary handle. Overall this product was a great buy as it doubles up as a style icon and paves the way for future innovative radio design. To be honest as soon as I saw it I fell in love with its modtro design and it should certainly feature in a league with items such as the space hopper, Nokia 3310 and other great iconic products. The best thing however that you can buy it new now rather than waiting three decades for its re-release.
