Women! Prison! A sadistic wardess! Jess Franco! I knew I had to get my hands on this Barbed Wire Dolls DVD, and when I finally got to see it, I wasn't disappointed. Lina Romay plays Maria de Guerra, an innocent woman who is jailed for killing her abusive father.
So off to prison she goes where she's faced with all manner of corruption, perversion, and downright brutality. When the evil Dr.Moore shows more than a passing interest in Maria, she decides to use her sexuality as a way of hatching an escape plan.
Lina Romay is forced to undergo more torture and degradation than usual here, as director Jess Franco thinks up more depraved ways of amusing his audience (look out for the electric shock treatment).
Barbed Wire Dolls, for me, ranks as one of the best women-in-prison movies of all time, it's right up there with Demmes Caged Heat, a classic of the genre.
Trivia fans will be interested to know that although the movie is set in South America, most of the actual shooting took place in an old military compound in France. Also, look out for Franco himself as he makes a cameo appearance as Maria's father!
Love them or hate them, Franco's films are, let's say, different; and if you're new to his films, then chances are you won't be able to decide until you've seen a whole bunch of them. Barbed Wire Dolls is a good place to start. So why not start your collection now?
This is the Region 2 disc from Anchor Bay, the finest print of this movie available. Extras include interviews with Franco and Romay and a large quantity of trailers. The movie itself is nicely framed at 1.85:1.
